In 2023 the Sugar Salem Moody Cemetery started work on updating all records into a digital database. This effort has been beneficial to; and eye opening for the cemetery board. Prior to the cemetery secretary-treasurer’s resignation on May 1, 2024, the cemetery board discovered multiple inconsistencies resulting in the need for an internal audit of cemetery records; including all burials, deeds, graves and monuments in the cemetery.
Through this audit we have discovered and verified that there were over 140 graves that were never entered into the cemetery record book. In addition to this missing information, over 200 deeds were found to have missing or unverified information. While the cemetery board has been working to fix this information, we feel the need to clarify the information contained in the 200 deed stubs with problems, because some of the stubs were left incomplete.
The deeds we need information from were issued between the years of 2001 – 2024 (current). Below is a list of specific things we have found and would like to correct:
(1) 18 gravesites have been either verified as double sold or potentially double sold.
(2) 63 deed stubs were left “blank”.
(3) 29 deed stubs, have either no matching names or cemetery locations specified.
(4) 50 deed stubs require us to see the original deeds in order to verify necessary corrections and obvious mistakes.
(5) 15 names on deed stubs were never recorded, at time of sale, in the cemetery record book.
(6) 20 gravesites (2 lots) were sold in unusable locations, currently being used as a road.
The Cemetery board needs your help to complete this missing and unclear information contained in these records.
Please send a photo, digital or paper copy of your deed(s) to SSM Cemetery board member Chris Baldwin at, ssmcemetery@gmail.com, by mail to P.O. Box 13, Sugar City, Idaho 83448, or by using the form on this website as soon as practical. Board members will stay in contact with you to resolve any issues.
